Critics dismissed Kamala Harris’s new memoir as “cry baby stuff,” but her story reflects the lived realities of women—especially Black women—who break barriers and bear the burden of being first.![]()
Broader economic and career patterns show that Harris’ experiences reflect more than her own reality—they mirror what women and minority “firsts” encounter across society. Those who break into new roles report widespread pay gaps, fewer paths for advancement, and harsher penalties than peers. More and more are turning to entrepreneurship not from indulgence, but necessity in the face of shrinking opportunity.![]()
Black women working full time, year round were paid only 64 cents for every dollar paid to White men in 2023. Earlier data placed the figure at 61 cents. White women fare only slightly better at 77 cents. Even former President Barack Obama—whom Axelrod and Jones owe much of their relevance to—noted this reality, signing into law the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.![]()
At the same time, Black women are leaving the workforce at alarming rates. Nearly 300,000 have stepped away this year alone—a “stunning reversal” of hard-won gains. Economists estimate the drop costs the U.S. economy tens of billions. In a single month, more than 100,000 Black women lost jobs, the steepest decline of any group.![]()
Step into Harris’s shoes. The First woman Vice President. The First Black Vice President. The First South Asian Vice President.![]()
She is not a punchline. She is precedent. Put some respect on her name.

The network removal of Mr. Kimmel’s show last week almost immediately morphed into a flashpoint for free speech in America.

Media companies whose businesses stand on the First Amendment should show some spine and stand up for it.

Statement from Oneida County Democratic Committee Chair Mitch Ford regarding Charlie Kirk:![]()
Oneida County Democratic Committee Members,
![]()
I strongly condemn the reprehensible murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk today in Utah. Political violence is abhorrent and does not belong in our country. While I, like many of you, disagreed with his political stances, he had a constitutional right to express them, and his killing took that right away from him, undermines our democracy, and dangerously raises political tensions at a time of intense polarization. Moreover, Kirk was a husband, father, and son who deserved to go home to his family today—not meet a violent demise.![]()
In condemning Kirk's murder and defending his right to political expression, I don't excuse or forget his most ill-conceived political statements, some of which casually and callously condoned violence. He notably called for Paul Pelosi's assailant, who attacked Pelosi with a hammer in his home, to be bailed out of jail. And, ironically given today's incident, he argued, "I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal."![]()
Unfortunately, initial reactions to Kirk's death are stoking further division: President Donald Trump claims tonight, "Radical-left political violence has hurt too many innocent people and taken too many lives." Go further down the rabbit hole of social media at this moment, and Trump's statement only begins to scratch the surface of the vitriol aimed at Democrats, including calls for repression and reprisal. As of Wednesday evening, the shooter remains at large and officials have not specified a motive; however, the MAGA jury has already, without evidence, claimed Democrats writ large as guilty and deserving of punishment, with some asserting, "THIS IS WAR!"![]()
Cooler heads must prevail. Collective punishment is a war crime. And, contrary to what some foaming mouths across the aisle are saying tonight, Democrats don't want war with our countrymen. Quite the opposite, actually—we want to give everyone affordable health care, no matter their political beliefs.![]()
As a country, we need to create a better, more humane politics that puts nonviolence, universal human rights, and the fundamental dignity of every person at its core. As a party, we need leaders, candidates, and voters who support that vision through their hard work, effective communication, and ballots. And as a community, we need to speak the truth, listen earnestly, seek common ground with whom we disagree, and stay ever vigilant to the authoritarian undercurrents circulating in our midst.![]()
Keep marching. Keep faith in each other and America. We can't afford to stop.![]()
Kind regards,
Mitch
Mitchell G. Ford, Chair
